Experience
I've taken a number of English classes in college, focusing mainly on European literature. In particular, I took classes on Viking literature, focusing on the Icelandic sagas; World Literature, ranging from the Popul Vuh to King Arthur; Enlightenment Literature, both poetry and prose; Early British Literature, including Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales; and Victorian Literature, including Tennyson and Morris. I've taken more hours of literary analysis, particularly regarding Genre fiction, in my creative writing classes. Even outside of my college education, I have an extensive knowledge of the Encyclopedia Britannica's Great Books collection, ranging from Plato to Dostoevsky. This also includes classic works of literature, such as Paradise Lost, Tale of Two Cities, and the Iliad. This laid the foundation for later work I did in college and greatly expanded my knowledge of essay structures and formats, as well as citation styles. I've always wanted to share and help others discover the wonders of writing, and tutoring is a natural fit for that. I tutored writing at University of Evansville's Writing Center for my senior year, working predominantly with ESL students on grammar, punctuation, and formatting. I worked with an average of six students a week, on topics as diverse as business profiles to engineering project reports to psychological essays to English papers. I also worked in the Student Writers of Indiana Program during freshman year of college. The program focused on engaging high school students in writing and teaching concepts of both prose and poetry. It helped inform my means of creating a lesson plan and how to proceed in the class room, as well as keeping students engaged. Senior year I took this a step further and was a teaching assistant in an anthropology class, teaching multiple lessons over the semester and ran weekly office hours and study sessions. Test Scores and Honors: GRE Scores: Verbal Reasoning: 165 Qualitative Reasoning: 157 Analytical Writing: 4.5 Dean’s list for 4 years at University of Evansville, Graduated Magna Cum Laude this last year with a BFA in Creative Writing and a minor in Anthropology.
