Education

I am a current Ph.D. student at San Diego State University currently studying Mathematics and Science Education. I have a Master's in Neurobiology from Arizona State University (2015). I have a Bachelor's in Psychology with minors in Child Development, Biology, Religion, and Chemistry (GPA 3.98)

Experience

I started out when I was 15 tutoring a group of inner-city kids at a mission center. I fell in love and have been working in some aspect of education since. I now own & operate a small company, The Knowledge Branch. Our mission is to empower students of all abilities, traditional & non-traditional, in their academic journey by providing personalized educational resources & tools designed to equip, bolster, & guide. We believe that quality educational resources should never come at a high dollar price but should be affordable & attainable. Personally, I am a 3rd Grade- HS core-studies specialist. My areas of expertise are reading comprehension, writing, proofreading, & language arts, foundational mathematics up through Algebra 2 including geometry, general science, biology, chemistry, & social studies/humanities. I am also proficient at teaching self-management skills, study skills, & test prep. In my work for test prep, I specialize in elementary, secondary, & post-secondary students. My areas of expertise are test anxiety, self-confidence, & test preparation. For scholastic & assessment test prep, I have developed my own proven SAT/ACT curriculum & adapted/applied that curriculum to other tests such as the Kaplan Nursing Exam, GED, & the ASVAB. Additionally, I specialize in students who have all kinds of learning abilities, including those with ADD, ADHD, autism, & who have traumatic brain injuries. Working with these amazing students has made my teaching style very versatile - I once taught biology by using a pizza and reading comprehension out of My Little Pony figurines! Basically, I adapt to each student's learning style so they can reach their maximum potential!

Hobbies

I am an extremely diverse person. My friends would say I am "Queen of the Nerds" because I love all things Marvel, Star Wars, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Harry Potter, science-related, etc. However, more than than, I enjoy differences. I love learning about someone else's interests and why it interests them. I have found some of the most amazing books, amazing movies, amazing places to go, amazing hobbies from talking with my students. I have worked with students of all different cultures with their own likes and dislikes and that is what is so amazing about this job. I can learn something. My students teach me. I remember I was dabbling in photography a few years back and one of my students loved photography. She was having a very difficult time with her math, so we took a mental break and I talked to her about these pictures I was trying to take on my DSLR camera. She started talking about filters, angles and all of these other tricks I could try - effectively getting her out of "frustrated" mode. We were then able to resume and her mind wasn't bogged down. I've used this trick several times to help students de-escalate from a frustrating situation. It works well.
